Inverse centrifugal effect induced by collective motion of vortices in rotating thermal convection

چکیده
Abstract When a fluid system is subject to strong rotation, centrifugal motion expected, i.e., denser (lighter) moves outward (inward) from (toward) the axis of rotation. Here we demonstrate, both experimentally and numerically, existence an unexpected warm lighter vortices in rotating thermal convection. This anomalous vortex occurs under rapid rotations when buoyancy sufficiently induce symmetry-breaking vorticity field, cold anticyclones overrides that cyclones. We show through hydrodynamic interactions densely distributed can self-aggregate into coherent clusters exhibit collective this flow regime. Interestingly, correlation velocity fluctuations within cluster scale-free, with length being proportional ( ≈ 30%) length. Such long-range leads counterintuitive vortices. Our study brings insights dynamics are widely present nature.

متن کاملCentrifugal effects in rotating convection: nonlinear dynamics
Rotating convection in cylindrical containers is a canonical problem in fluid dynamics, in which a variety of simplifying assumptions have been used in order to allow for low-dimensional models or linear stability analysis from trivial basic states. An aspect of the problem that has received only limited attention is the influence of the centrifugal force, because it makes it difficult or even ...

15 صفحه اولTransition to Centrifugal Particle Motion in Rotating Drums
The dynamics and the transition to the centrifugal regime are studied analytically and numerically for particles in rotating drum. The importance of the particle-wall friction coefficient is demonstrated by studying first the motion of one non-rotating particle where three different regimes are found in the transition to the centrifugal motion. When a few rotating particles are considered, they...
